LUMINA
Lumina is an Italian manufacturer of high-tech lamps with simple lines for the residential and contract sectors. It’s based in Arluno, a small town in the province of Milan where it was set up in 1980 by Tommaso Cimini, a mechanical engineering expert. His original insight - “Lots of light, not much lamp” – is still the inspiration and mission at Lumina: to design lighting products in which function generates form and technology is at the service of performance and durability.
It was Tommaso Cimini who created the famous Daphine lamp, the company’s signature product and an icon of Italian design. It was characterized by three basic elements: a slender articulated arm, a small adjustable diffuser and a transformer, deliberately unconcealed, on the base. 45 years on, the Daphine is still admired and used all over the world and features in the permanent collections of major design and contemporary art museums (Brooklyn Museum and Judd Foundation in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Die Neue Sammlung in Munich and The Israel Museum in Jerusalem).
Thanks to loyalty to the spirit of its founder and rigorous production methods, Lumina has been able to establish prestige partnerships with designers and architects of international renown. First and foremost, Foster + Partners, which with Lumina have designed lamps of essential beauty characterized by highly sophisticated engineering, including the Eva (table) and its little sister Eve, Flo (reading, in different versions) and Dot, the ethereal pendant lamp.
KNIKERBOKER
Knikerboker was born in 2004 after many years of experience in the field of fashion, because Gigi, the owner, and Beppe, his brother, used to work in a dress shop. It is known that both design and fashion’s principal aim was the research for elegance and uniqueness typical of Made in Italy.
It is the reason why the main feature of our company is handicraft, all products are completely handmade, using extremely modern materials such as aluminium, steel, iron and brass. We like working and shaping with this kind of materials because they can me shaped, bent and thumped by hand. This means that each piece of our collections is unique, a stand-alone work, even on a large scale lamps preserve their own uniqueness, being similar but not equal. The finishings we use are paintings, which we have some standard choices in our catalog, and the metallic leaves such as silver, gold, copper and bronze. Each finish can be mixed and combined at will in our lamps facing every costumers and furnishings needs. The other important feature of our company is that we can customise our lamps in shapes and sizes too.
With the experience achieved during these years using ferrous materials we learnt how to work them and create objects able to satisfy different needs coming from clients producing suggestive lamps that produce and reflect light in different ways from each others. From a small handicraft activity, the company eventually acquired visibility and credibility nationally and mostly internationally, bringing our products to be known, valued and sold in all the world.
